Gerbils as Pets A Quick but Helpful Guide

2 Min Read

Gerbils are friendly, curious little pets and are especially popular with families in the UK. Originally from dry, desert regions of Asia, gerbils are natural diggers and explorers, which explains a lot about their behaviour at home.

Housing:
Gerbils are best kept in a large glass tank or gerbilarium, rather than a traditional wire cage. They need deep bedding (around 8–10 inches minimum) so they can dig tunnels and burrows this isn’t just fun for them, it’s essential for their mental wellbeing. Tanks also prevent bedding being kicked everywhere and reduce drafts.

Social needs:
Gerbils are very social animals and should never be kept alone. They thrive in same-sex pairs or small groups that have been introduced properly. A lonely gerbil can become stressed or depressed.

Diet:
A good quality gerbil food mix should make up the main part of their diet, alongside fresh hay for nesting and chewing. Small amounts of fresh vegetables can be offered as treats, and clean water should always be available.

Behaviour & handling:
Gerbils are active, alert, and usually awake during the day, making them lovely pets to watch. They’re generally gentle, enjoy interaction, and are less likely to bite than some other small pets when handled calmly and regularly.

Important to know:
Gerbils love to chew it’s part of keeping their teeth healthy so wooden toys and safe enrichment are a must.

When kept correctly, gerbils are entertaining, affectionate little pets full of personality
